How to Grow and Shape Jasmine Plants

True jasmine grows on a vine and hails from India. The white flowers decorating this plant are fragrant and bloom all summer long or all year long in warm climates. Jasmine is evergreen and hardy to the U.S. Department of Agricultural zones 9 to 11. It grows up from 6 to 10 feet tall with an equally wide spread in most cases. Jasmine is so easy to grow it is in danger of becoming invasive in areas like Florida.

  Clear a place in your yard for the jasmine. It needs full sun to partial shade and moist soil to grow well. The side of your house or near a fence are both suitable places to plant the jasmine.

  Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the surface of the soil and work it into a depth of 6 to 8 inches before you plant the jasmine. Dig a hole for the jasmine as deep as the root ball and two times as wide. Place the jasmine in the hole and fill the hole with soil.

  Water the jasmine frequently during the summer. Add 1 to 2 inches of water to the jasmine a week. Lessen the amount of water in the winter to 1 inch of water every other week.

  Cut back jasmine with pruners to shape once every month or two to keep it within its bounds. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased foliage at the jasmine's base. Trim back any over-reaching vines with the pruners. Cut the jasmine into the shape you desire.
