Moor Ornamental Grass

The moor ornamental grass (Sesleria) group consists of more than 20 different species of perennial grasses. Most moor grasses are low growing. They are natives of the highlands and moors of Europe. Moor grasses are preferred for their low maintenance.

  1. Description

    • Moor grass has a mounded growth habit with narrow, green grass blades. The grass blooms with tall spikes of open, airy, purple flowers during the middle of summer. Both the blades and flowers turn yellow in the fall. The grass has a mature height of 1 to 2 feet with an equal spread.

    Cultural Conditions

    • Being a native of wet moorlands, moor grass is more adapted to growing in moist soil than a number of other ornamental grasses are. Water grass well, especially during warm weather, and mulch roots to retain moisture. Moor grass is hardy in USDA zones 4 and 5.

    Propagation

    • Moor grass is easy to propagate from division. Transplant container-grown grass during spring and early summer as this allows plants to get established before fall and winter. Buy larger-sized grass as the plant is slow in getting established. Plant grass at the same soil level it grew at in containers.
