Are There Any Cold-Hardy Orange Trees?

Orange trees are natives of subtropical regions and thrive best in areas with warm, humid temperatures. Though orange trees generally have a poor tolerance for very low temperatures and frosts, certain orange varieties are relatively more cold hardy.

  1. Satsuma

    • Satsuma orange trees are native to Japan and tolerate temperatures as low as the mid-20 degrees Fahrenheit. The seedless oranges are very sweet and have a low acid content. The variety has demonstrated superior cold tolerance in field tests conducted by the Texas Cooperative Extension.

    Rusk Citrange

    • A citrange is the result of a cross between sweet orange and trifoliate orange. Rusk is cited as among the most cold-tolerant citrange varieties by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The trees are tolerant of temperatures as low as 0 degrees F.

    Hamlin

    • Hamlin is a sweet orange variety that can tolerate temperatures as low as 20 degrees F. The seedless fruit is ready to harvest in October and November. The University of Georgia Extension lists Hamlin as the most cold tolerant of the sweet oranges.
