Weed Control in Centipede Grasses in Florida

Centipedegrass is a native of southeastern Asia and is favored for its ability to thrive in acidic, infertile soils. Centipedegrass is especially well-adapted to northern and central Florida and is the most-used grass in home in the Florida panhandle. Weed management in Florida centipede grass includes control of henbit, dandelion, betony and annual bluegrass.

  1. Handpulling

    • The University of Florida Extension recommends hand pulling few weeds to remove them. This is less time consuming and often takes care of the problem. This is however not possible in case weeds are widespread in the lawn.

    Mowing

    • Mowing the lawn frequently can eliminate a number of annual weeds. If you mow before the weeds produce seedheads, it will keep the weeds from spreading. However, this will not control weeds that spread via rhizomes.

    Herbicides

    • Herbicides are the last resort for uncontrolled weed problem. You have the option of using pre-emergrence or post-emergence products. Pre-emergence herbicides control weeds prior to germination, while post-emergence products are used on established weeds. Pre-emergence herbicides include bunsulide, benfin or pendimethalin. Some post-emergence herbicide options are dicamba and benzoic acid.
