Size of Purple Fountain Grass

Purple fountain grass (P. setaceum Rubrum), an annual ornamental grass is cited as the most popular of the fountain grass varieties in The American Meadow Garden by John Greenlee and Saxon Holt (2009). Purple fountain grass has distinct dimension and size, with flowers that bloom from spring to fall.

  1. Size

    • Purple fountain grass is 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide with narrow, curving, 1 ½ to 3 foot long, red shaded blades. The purplish-pink to copper colored, feathery flowers or inflorescences are 12 inches long and grow on 3-foot long stems.

    Growing Conditions

    • The grass is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11 and is considered mildly invasive. The fast growing plant thrives best in areas of full sun and adapts to a variety of soil types including acidic, alkaline and clay. Purple fountain grass mildly tolerates drought, and reseeds frequently to produce small plantlets.

    Uses

    • Purple fountain grass is used as a specimen and accent plant in gardens either singly or in mass planting. The grass looks ideal in borders and as background plants in flower beds. The fresh flowers work well in floral arrangements, but once dry, they disintegrate easily.
