The University of California Extension lists the use of benefin, dithiopyr and metolachlor as among the weed killers used on bermudagrass lawns. The chemicals are available under a variety of different trade names.
Products with benefin are classified as preemergence herbicides that retard germination of weed seeds and keep the plants from emerging. Benefin is not effective on established weeds. Dithiopyr is both a preemergence and early postemergent weed-control herbicide and is effective throughout the season. Metolachlor is a general-use, preemergence herbicide and is often sold in combination with other products.
Benefin controls certain broadleaf weeds such as speedwell and grasses in lawns. Products containing dithiopyr are effective for the control of grasses such as crabgrass and broadleaf weeds, and metachlor is used to suppress nutsedge, grasses and certain broadleaf weeds. Metachlor products are specifically for warm-season turfgrasses such as Bermuda.
