Rice and Herbicides

Timely weed management is an important step towards a prolific rice harvest. The grain is the most important crop of developing nations. A number of herbicides are recommended for weed control in rice.
  1. Identification

    • Effective herbicides for rice include carfentrazone-ethyl, thiobencarb, propanil and bispyribac-sodium, as cited by the University of Florida Extension. The chemicals are sold under a variety of different trade names.

    Targeted Weeds

    • Products containing carfentrazone-ethyl control Texas weed, alligator weed, pigweed and redstem. Thiobencarb and propanil are good for suppressing broadleaf weeds and grasses and bispyribac-sodium helps with the control of Mexican weed, alligatorweed and Texas weed.

    Method of Use

    • Apply carfentrazone-ethyl when weeds are less than 4 inches tall for best control. The recommended application time for thiobencarb is prior to emergence of weeds immediately after planting of crop. Use propanil when rice plants are in the one- to two-leaf stage and bispyribac-sodium at the three-leaf stage.
