Tall Cylindrical Mushrooms Growing in a Yard

Mushrooms are fleshy or woody members from the fungi family. Many mushroom species are edible. There are thousands of identified mushroom species around the world, as cited by the University of Colorado Extension. Mushrooms are distinctly shaped, such as tall, cylindrical ones.
  1. Identification

    • The shaggy mane mushroom (Coprinus comatus) is an edible mushroom species. Shaggy mane grows singly or in groups, and often keeps appearing in the same area repeatedly. The variety is considered among the high-end edible mushrooms.

    Description

    • Shaggy mane mushrooms are 2 to 10 inches tall, and have cylindrical, shaggy caps with brown scales. The gills are hidden under the caps when the mushrooms are young, and gradually turn into a dark liquid with age. The lower area is white and hollow. Shaggy mane mushrooms are best eaten before the gills starts to liquefy.

    Habitat

    • Shaggy mane mushrooms are commonly seen in yards from May to June, and again between September and October. The mushroom grows easily in hard, compacted soil and wood chips, and is commonly found near trails and roadsides.
