Bermuda Grass Strains

Bermuda grass (Cynodon spp.) is a coarse-textured grass in varying shades of green. Like its color, the warm-season grass also has varying levels of maintenance, depending on variety. Bermuda grass thrives in heat and full sun and has low tolerance for shade. The grass comes in a range of strains or varieties.
  1. Types

    • Strains of bermuda grass include tifgreen (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis), Santa Ana (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis) and sunturf (C. magennissii).

    Background

    • Sunturf is a natural strain of bermuda grass native to South Africa, and is a hybrid of C. dactylon and C. transvaalensis. Tifgreen is a strain introduced by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and Crop Research Division. Santa Ana also is native to South African and was introduced in the United States in 1954.

    Description

    • Santa Ana has a dark blue-green color and a medium-fine texture. The variety has very good tolerance for smog and salt, and retains its color well into fall. Tifgreen is soft and fine-textured, and has a dense, weed-resistant growth. The grass is among the most frequently used for golf greens. Sunturf is dark green in color and fine-textured. The low-growing strain has a dense growth and is popular in lawns in the Southwestern U.S.
