Strains of bermuda grass include tifgreen (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis), Santa Ana (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis) and sunturf (C. magennissii).
Sunturf is a natural strain of bermuda grass native to South Africa, and is a hybrid of C. dactylon and C. transvaalensis. Tifgreen is a strain introduced by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and Crop Research Division. Santa Ana also is native to South African and was introduced in the United States in 1954.
Santa Ana has a dark blue-green color and a medium-fine texture. The variety has very good tolerance for smog and salt, and retains its color well into fall. Tifgreen is soft and fine-textured, and has a dense, weed-resistant growth. The grass is among the most frequently used for golf greens. Sunturf is dark green in color and fine-textured. The low-growing strain has a dense growth and is popular in lawns in the Southwestern U.S.
