Safe Lawn Weed Killer

Weeds are undesired plants in lawns and gardens. A weed killer or herbicide may be needed for control. When selecting safe weed killers, organic herbicides rate higher than synthetics. A safe weed killer is also preferred in homes with pets and small children.
  1. Identification

    • Corn gluten meal is among the easily available organic herbicides from garden centers or online. The product safe and poses no health risk or damage to pets, humans and the desired plants, as cited by David R. Mellow in "The Lawn Bible.

    Description

    • The wet milling of corn results in corn gluten meal. The product is highly nutritious with 55 to 65 percent protein and smaller amounts of fiber and starch. Corn gluten meal is also rich in sulfur amino acids. Given its nutritional value, the product is widely used as a source of supplementary protein in animal feed mixes.

    Targeted Weeds

    • Use corn gluten meal in lawns as an effective pre-emergence herbicide for controlling a number of annual grasses such as crabgrass. Reduce the growth of crabgrass up to 50 to 60 percent within the first year of corn gluten meal use and up to 98 percent by the second year. Four years of use gets rid of dandelions completely, as cited by Mellor in "The Lawn Bible."
