Earliest Spring Roses

Roses are among the most grown and most recognized flowers around the world. The flowers have been in cultivation for thousands of years and come in a variety of colors. Though roses generally bloom in spring and summer, some varieties bloom very early in the season.
  1. Types

    • The North Carolina State University Extension site lists a number of early-blooming rose varieties. These include Berries 'n' Cream (Rosa 'Poulclimb') and Dainty Bess (Rosa 'Dainty Bess').

    Description

    • Berries 'n' Cream roses, also referred to as Calypso, are a climbing rose variety that grows as tall as 15 feet. The 2-inch inch flowers are pink- and cream-colored with a fruity fragrance. Dainty Bess is a shrub rose and blooms in a light pink color. The flat, single flowers with ruffled edges grow in clusters. The plant grows 3 to 4 feet tall with dark green foliage.

    Growth Habits

    • Dainy Bess has an upright, vigorous growth and does best in areas with full sun. The plant is tolerant of poor soil and blooms repeatedly over summer. Berries 'n' Cream thrives best in areas with mild climate and has a vigorous growth habit, blooming early on both old and new wood. The rose vine has few thorns.
