How to Grow Arborvitae From Seed

Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) is an evergreen conifer native to the northeast North America. The tree is also referred to as Eastern arborvitae and white cedar. Though the most widely used method of propagation is with cuttings, you can also start the tree with seeds. The dense, pyramidal tree has a mature height of 40 to 50 feet, with some varieties in shades of blue. Arborvitae trees grow well with minimal care and do not require frequent pruning to maintain their shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for cones to change from a green to a yellow color, and then to brown. The ripe cones open about a week later and disperse seeds.

    • 2

Pick the cones while they are still closed. Spread in a sunny site to dry, then shake out the seeds.

    • 3

Fill a small plastic container with peat moss. Press the seeds into the peat moss and close the lid. Use more than just one or two seeds as many seeds are often empty.

    • 4

Store or stratify these seeds in the fridge for two months at 34 to 40 degrees F. This helps to break the dormancy for spring planting.

    • 5

Prepare the landscape site for the tree in areas of full sun and with a fertile, well-drained soil. Do not plant in heavy shade as this leads to leggy growth.

    • 6

Plant seeds directly outdoors in spring. Plant at least 50 seeds for every square foot of ground to increase chances of success with germination.
