Step-By-Step Date Palm Seedlings

Date palm tree are natives of the Mediterranean and are grown in the desert regions. The trees produce oblong, 1- to 3-inch dark brown fruit containing a single hard stone. Date palm grows and produces best in regions with a long, hot growing season and daily temperatures of 90 degrees F. The palm has a mature height of 100 to 120 feet with 20-feet long, green to bluish-green leaves and comes in hundreds of different varieties. It is easy to propagate date palm seedlings using the seed from the fruit.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seeds from a handful of fresh or dried dates. Soak the seeds for one to two days in a bowl of water. Place the bowl in a warm area. Change the water every few hours during the daytime.

    • 2

Drain the water and clean seeds carefully. Remove any hair or fibers stuck in the crevices because these can lead to fungus.

    • 3

Fill half of a small plastic container with vermiculite. Sprinkle only enough water to make the medium barely moist. Do not overwater. The vermiculite should feel rather dry to touch.

    • 4

Scatter the seeds lightly in this growing medium. Close the top of the box and put in a warm spot to germinate, such as over a hot water tank. Seeds germinate best at about 90 degrees F.

    • 5

Open box and inspect seeds carefully for fungus without disturbing them. Sprinkle water lightly over seeds. It can take two to three months for the seeds to germinate.

    • 6

Fill a small pot with equal amounts of compost and coarse grit or sand. Transfer the seedlings to the pot. Plant at a shallow depth. Place pot in a warm area.

    • 7

Transfer seedlings to medium-sized pots filled with well-draining potting soil when the shoots start to appear. Allow plants to establish before transplanting to a permanent spot in the garden.
