How to Kill Cedar Hedges

Cedars (Cedrus spp.) are evergreen conifers from the cypress family. The fast-growing trees are widely used for creating hedges, privacy screens, and windbreaks in landscapes because of their dense, thick growth. Cedar trees have few disease- and pest-related issues and adapt well to a variety of climates and growing conditions. There is often the need to get rid of an unwanted cedar hedge from the landscape. The best way to do this is to the kill the plant with the use of an herbicide such as glyphosate.

Instructions

    • 1

Select herbicide with the active ingredient glyphosate to kill your cedar hedge, as recommended by the Washington State University Extension. The best time to use glyphosate is during August and September.

    • 2

Spray the leaves of the hedge to kill the plant. This is referred to as foliar treatment. The chemical is translocated through the leaves into the roots of the plant. You can effectively treat cedar hedges using this method.

    • 3

Cover the plant from all sides and treat all areas. Do not overspray or drench the foliage to the point of runoff. The herbicide will kill any other plant life it touches.

    • 4

Avoid the use of herbicide on very hot days or on plants that are severely drought stressed. Repeat application after seven to 10 days.

    • 5

Cut and remove the plants when they are dead. Dig out smaller stumps with a hoe. Grind larger stumps to a depth of about 1 foot below the soil line.
