How to Grow Italian Parsley From Seed

Italian parsley grows from 2 to 3 feet tall and has feathery, pale green foliage. Its leaves have a sweeter, more intense flavor than other varieties. The plants are biennial, meaning they live for two years, but are most often grown as annuals. Italian parsley thrives in full sun and fertile, fast-draining soil. Start the seeds indoors during late winter or very early spring and move the seedlings to a prepared garden site after frost danger has passed.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a small container with warm water. Pour the Italian parsley seeds into the water and allow them to soak for 24 hours.

    • 2

Pour potting soil into 3-inch growing containers.

    • 3

Sprinkle the Italian parsley seeds onto the surface of the soil. Cover them with a 1/8-inch layer of soil and mist with a spray bottle until it is moist enough to stick to your finger. Continue to dampen the soil whenever it dries out.

    • 4

Thin the seedlings when they are 3 inches tall by snipping all but the sturdiest plants off at soil level with scissors.

    • 5

Use a spade to cultivate the garden soil until it is loose to a depth of 10 to 12 inches.

    • 6

Dig planting holes just deep enough to set the Italian parsley seedlings at the level they grew in the containers. Water until the soil feels evenly moist. Leave a space of 10 inches between the plants.

    • 7

Apply 2 inches of mulch around the seedlings to discourage the growth of weeds. Water as necessary to keep the soil lightly moist.

    • 8

Broadcast 5-10-5 fertilizer around the plants three to four weeks after transplanting. Apply 3 ounces to every 10-foot row. Scrape the granules into the surface layer of soil and water thoroughly after applying the fertilizer.
