How to Grow Centella Asiatica

Centella asiatica, also known as gotu kola or the Asiatic coinwort, is a medicinal herb commonly used in alternative medicine. The herb grows by sprouting underground runners, and it thrives in wet soil where other plants would become root-rotted. It is a low maintenance plant that you can use to fill in a mixed-species lawn or to cover bare spots in shaded, damp areas of the yard. Once you plant it, the coinwort will spread voluntarily.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a seed starting tray with potting soil. Water until the soil is moist. Insert the seeds just below the surface of the soil.

    • 2

Set the tray in a greenhouse or a portable propagator. Keep the soil moist to the touch. Once the seedlings have sprouted, you can transplant them to individual 4-inch pots. This will take about two weeks. Keep the seedlings indoors for the first winter.

    • 3

Remove all weeds from the planting site in the spring. The site should have constantly moist soil and receive full sun or partial shade.

    • 4

Dig planting holes that are twice the width of the plant's containers and just as deep. Remove the plants from their containers, and lower one into each hole.

    • 5

Firm the soil around the base of the plant. Water until the soil settles. Continue watering frequently enough to keep the soil moist at all times.
