Mix the potting soil with sand. It should be a 50 to 50 ration to mimic the native growing conditions of the Ma-Huang plant.
Plant the seeds. Fill half of the shallow germination tray with the planting medium. This needs a depth of 1 to 2 inches. Evenly spread the seeds over the top of the planting medium. Place a thin layer of planting medium over the seeds and press down firmly. Keep evenly moist until the seeds germinate. Depending on conditions, that should take 10 days to two weeks.
Replant into larger containers. After germination, water at only a moderate amount and allow the plant to dry out between watering. When the plant is 4 to 5 inches tall, transplant it into individual pots with the same growing medium as used for germination. Plant reaches maturity within two to three years. This can be noted by the growth of a smooth, woody bark.
