How to Grow Dill From Seeds

Dill, or Anethum graveolens, are annual and biennial herbs that belong to the parsley family. This fragrant, feathery herb grows wild in some areas of the world but is also cultivated for culinary uses in home and commercial gardens. Dill is a popular ingredient in pickling and cream-based sauces. You can buy dill seedlings from gardening centers or grow your own plants from seed. For the tastiest results, it is recommended that dill is grown from seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location in the garden where dill will get full sun. Feel the soil with your fingers and examine it closely. Soil should be well drained, not soggy or constantly wet.

    • 2

Mix 1/2 tablespoon of 16-16-8 all purpose fertilizer for every square foot of soil, using a garden rake.

    • 3

Sow the seeds directly into the soil, sprinkling them evenly throughout the garden spot you have chosen. Cover the seeds loosely using the garden rake.

    • 4

Water seeds lightly, then once a week if no rainfall occurs. Allow the seeds one to three weeks for germination.

    • 5

Thin out the seeds once they've reached 2 inches in height. Thinning promotes healthier growth of your dill plants.
