Germination for Oregano

Oregano is a flavorful, leafy green herb often used in soups, sauces and meat dishes. This plant is easy to grow in the home garden, as it is relatively low maintenance and grows equally well in the ground or in containers. Oregano is cultivated from seed, but unlike other seeds, these require special care and conditions in order to properly germinate.

  1. Growing Mix

    • Oregano seeds need a light, well-drained soil mix to effectively germinate. Use a light soil and work plenty of peat moss and perlite into the mix to make it extra-moist, well-drained and fertile. Soil should be slightly acidic and moistened before seeds are planted. Do not over-moisten the soil making it soggy or muddy.

    Temperature and Light

    • Light is unnecessary for oregano seeds to germinate, however, sunlight or grow lights are often necessary to provide the warmth oregano seeds need to thrive. Soil temperature must be warm, at least 70 F, for the seeds to begin the germination process. A sunny window often provides the ideal starting place for oregano seeds, but a metal-halide grow light produces light and warmth ideal for growing leafy green oregano plants.

    Moisture

    • After sprinkling the oregano seeds into your growing mix, they must be lightly watered. After the initial watering, seeds should be watered daily or often enough to keep them evenly moist. Soil should never grow excessively wet, or the seeds may rot before germination or fail to germinate properly. Keep humidity levels high during the germination period. 85 percent humidity is ideal for oregano seeds.

    Time

    • Be patient when growing oregano seeds. Allow your seeds seven to 14 days to germinate under ideal conditions. Remember that even under ideal conditions, after the seven- to 14-day period is up only three-quarters of the seeds you planted often germinate. Keep an eye on your seeds and care for them properly during the germination period to increase your chances of a successful oregano seed germination.
