Musa cheesmani, also known as the Cheesmani banana, is a banana plant native to the Assam area in India. This herbaceous plant is hardy down to U.S. Department of Agriculture zone 8, meaning it can handle temperatures below freezing. This banana tree needs full sun and rich, well-drained soil to thrive. The plant grows easily from seed, and the fruits are about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide.
Soak the Musa cheesmani seeds in lukewarm water for three days.
Fill small pots with the potting mix and add water until moist. Plant one seed in each pot, about 1/2 inch deep.
Cover the pots with plastic bags and place them in a location where the temperature is between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic bag when the seeds sprout and are at least 2 inches tall. Place the pots in full sun and water daily.
Transplant the Musa cheesmani to an area of your garden that is well-drained and receives full sun.
Add 2 to 3 tbsp. of 10-10-10 fertilizer to the banana plants every two weeks while they're growing. Sprinkle the fertilizer at the base of the Musa cheesmani and water it for five to 10 minutes.
