How to Germinate Coriandrum Sativum Seeds

Coriandrum sativum is the botanical name of the herbs coriander and cilantro. The green leaves of the plant, called cilantro, are harvested and used as an herb, while the round, brown seeds, called coriander, are used as a spice in cooking. You can also plant the seeds to grow more Coriandrum sativum plants in your garden. The plants grow best in cooler months and often wilt under the hot heat of the summer sun.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden fork
  • Coriandrum seeds
  • Garden hose

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the early spring to germinate the coriandrum seed, when there is no chance of further frost occurring. The ideal soil temperature to germinate coriandrum is between 55 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Identify an outdoor location that has partial sunlight, which will shade the plant somewhat and extend the growing season. If you live in a cooler climate, opt for full sunlight.

    • 3

Pull up all grass and weeds from the area using your hands to prevent them from competing with the coriandrum seeds for water and soil nutrients.

    • 4

Loosen the soil to a 2-inch depth, using a garden fork, and smooth the top of the soil as evenly as possible.

    • 5

Create a 1/2-inch-deep trench along the planting site using the handle of the garden fork. Insert the coriandrum seeds into the trench spacing them 1 to 2 inches apart. Push the removed soil back into the trench until the seeds are completely covered.

    • 6

Moisten the soil to a 2-inch depth using a fine spray from a garden hose. Apply more water as needed to keep the soil constantly moist until the coriandrum seeds germinate.
