How to Plant Ikea Chives

Chives are a simple herb to grow from seed and great to have on hand to use fresh in cooking. Chives can be grown easily in small containers, on a sunny windowsill or out on the deck. They can also be planted directly in your garden, and will benefit nearby vegetables as well as roses. From seed, these perennial plants may take up to a year to reach harvest, but will continue to grow for years. You can find chives in numerous stores, including Ikea. Chives should be planted in the spring or fall for optimal growth.

Things You'll Need

  • Planting pot (optional)
  • Potting soil (optional)
  • Compost
  • All-purpose fertilizer
  • Chive seeds
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

    • 1

Select an area of the garden, deck space or window sill with full sun exposure. If you're planting seeds in a flower pot, fill the pot to one inch from the top with potting soil. Mix in a small handful of fertilizer and two large handfuls of compost. If planting outdoors, mix fertilizer and compost into the first four inches of soil in selected area.

    • 2

Spray soil surface with water to dampen. Spread seeds over the surface as evenly as possible. Cover with 1/4 inch of fine soil. Mist soil surface with a spray bottle to dampen and prevent excessive seed movement.

    • 3

Moisten seed bed daily with the spray bottle until germination. After germination, water thoroughly and regularly to keep consistently moist. Keep area free of weeds. When chives are one to two inches, thin the seedlings to allow four inches between plants.
