When Do Allium Bloom?

Alliums are bulb plant members of the onion family. Some are purely ornamental, others produce colorful flowers but most are primarily grown for culinary use. Different species blossom from spring through fall.
  1. Ornamental Allium

    • Ornamental allium range from 1- to 5-feet tall. Their flower heads include cottonball-to-softball size globes of florets, egg-shaped "drumsticks" and the spidery looks of tumbleweed and hair allium. Although lavenders and purples dominate the Allium family, its blossoms also come in shades of blue, burgundy, pink, white and yellow. The short Jeanette golden onion (Allium moly) is among the first to blossom and the mop-like heads of Japanese onion (Allium thunbergii), are among the latest.

    Chives

    • Bright-green, grass-like chives grow in clumps and are topped with tiny, lavender globes of florets that begin blossoming in late spring. Reaching 10- to 12-inches high, they are a graceful and flavorful border plant with edible flowers and leaves.

    Edible Onions

    • Edible onions (Allium cepa) develop white globes of florets about the size of ping pong balls on rigid stalks. The flowers appear as early as spring when the plants "bolt" in preparation for seed production.
