How to Store Spices in a Cupboard

While spices last longer when stored in non-transparent containers, there can be problems. If insects have managed to make their way into the package, you won't be able to see what is going on inside the container. This can be especially unwelcomed if you dump the spice (and bugs) directly into your food. It's possible for bugs to get into your spices, regardless of the transparency of the container. Yet, in a glass bottle, you can see the spices. Since exposure to light and heat shortens the life of spice, store them somewhere dark and dry, like your kitchen cupboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a cupboard that is dry and cool. Don't use the cupboard under the sink or over the oven. Cabinets under the sink tend to have exposure to moisture, while cabinets above the stove are warmer, as heat rises. Both moisture and heat shorten the life of spice.

Place each spice in an airtight container.

    • 3

Store the spices upright in the dark cupboard. Make sure the lids are securely tightened. Having them upright prevents spillage, especially if you failed to secure the lid.
