Herbal Garden Seeds

Herbs offer flavoring for foods, brighten wreathes and bouquets and sweeten your home with their gentle aroma. Growing an herb garden can be a rewarding pursuit, and most herbs will grow well from seed.
  1. Simple Seeds to Start

    • Herb expert Jo Ann Gardner, author of "Living with Herbs," recommends that the beginning herb gardener start with seeds that germinate easily and grow quickly. She recommends sage, arugula, basil, coriander, nasturtium, dill and chamomile as easy-to-grow and useful herbs.

    When and Where

    • Most herb seeds grow best if started indoors in late winter or early spring. You can start these seeds in trays or individual pots. Anise, coriander, dill and fennel grow best if sown directly into the garden.

    Planting Depth

    • In general, plant seeds at a depth twice the thickness of the seed. Some herb seeds, however, require light or darkness to germinate. Chamomile and dill require light, so scatter these seeds on the surface of the soil. Sage, coriander and nasturtium need darkness, so cover these seeds with adequate soil.
