Aloe plants grow to the size of their container, rarely outgrowing their environment. Most aloe plants grow between 12 and 24 inches tall and wide, but are capable of growing up to 4 feet high in warm conditions.
Terra cotta containers are the best type for growing aloe plants. Although aloe requires slightly dry growing conditions, the terra cotta holds excess moisture that the plant can absorb if necessary. Choose a container with drainage holes in the bottom and a drainage tray slightly larger than the base of the container to collect unabsorbed water.
The location where the aloe plant is kept must be considered. Small round containers or window boxes are best for keeping aloe plants in the windowsill. Choose a window box that drains into a built-in tray. Large containers placed on the floor near a window are less mobile due to their weight and curious children or pets may disturb the plants.
