Herb Planters for Railings

Using herb planters on deck, fence and walkway railings not only uses the available space, it creates visual appeal. Additionally, the herb planters are out of the way and easily accessible.
  1. Types

    • Herb planters come in a variety of types and styles including rectangular window boxes, hanging baskets and round containers. Most are made from terra cotta, plastic, wood or ceramic. Window box type planters work the best on railings due to their rectangular shape. Smaller round containers can also work, depending on the size of the railing. You can add hanging planters to the ends of railings.

    Sizes

    • Choose small 4- to 12-inch containers for planting one herb per container. Use strawberry planters or 12- to 36-inch long window boxes to plant multiple herbs together in the same container.

    Considerations

    • Terra cotta containers are better suited to indoor herbs or in locations with mild winters, as severe cold-weather conditions may cause them to crack or shatter. Secure small herb containers to outdoor railings or move them from the railings during periods of high wind to prevent them from falling.
