How to Use Pogostemon Patchouli Seeds

Pogostemon patchouli, also called true patchouli, is a perennial herb native to Asia. It's frost-tender, only hardy to the United States Department of Agricultural zones 9 to 11, and needs full sun to partial shade in which to thrive. Since patchouli is semi-tropical, it needs moderate water to grow well. The only use for patchouli seeds is to grow patchouli with them.

Instructions

    • 1

Select plastic or paper cell seed trays that are about 2 inches by 2 inches wide and 2 to 3 inches deep. Choose a sterile potting soil made of an equal combination of humus and sand or compost and sand. Fill the seed trays with the potting soil and wet the potting soil until it is moist.

    • 2

Sprinkle two to four seeds in each seed tray and cover them with ¼ inch of soil.

    • 3

Set the seed trays under one cool fluorescent grow light and one warm fluorescent grow light, about 6 to 8 inches beneath the lights. The cool fluorescent light will provide more blue spectrum light to the seedlings and the warm fluorescent light will provide more red spectrum light for the patchouli seedlings. Keep the lights on between 12 and 16 hours a day.

Keep the soil around the seeds constantly moist until they sprout.
