Fennel & Dill Plant Problems

Similar in appearance and growing habits, dill and fennel grow to about 3 feet tall. Dill is an annual with slightly smaller leaves than its perennial cousin, fennel. Fennel has a strong anise taste. Dill also has a hint of anise flavor.
  1. Planting

    • Neither dill nor fennel transplant easily. Plant seeds directly in the garden. Dill and fennel readily self-seed.

    Breakage

    • Dill's and fennel's tall, delicate branches break easily in high winds. Plant in a sheltered area or stake plants for protection.

    Caterpillars and Butterflies

    • Dill and fennel attract butterflies, especially swallowtails. Caterpillars seek shelter and food from the plants.
