Are Wheatgrass Seeds Toxic?

Wheatgrass is a detoxifying food that contains all the known elements of nutrition. It is grown from the sprouted seed of the wheat plant. As with most seeds, sprouting the wheatgrass seed enhances its nutritional value and helps with the digestion of the seed properties.
  1. Function

    • Wheatgrass is a complete food with no toxic effects. Although regularly consumed foods such as apples and cherries have toxic seeds, wheatgrass is not one of them. Wheatgrass seeds can also be ground into flour to make bread, pizza, and crackers.

    Considerations

    • Although wheatgrass seeds are not toxic, it is important to select a good quality seed when using the seeds for consumption. Organic seeds offer the highest quality, as they are grown without pesticides and other chemical sprays that are toxic.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Growing mold-free wheatgrass is synonymous to growing toxin-free wheatgrass. Wheatgrass grower Carroll J. MacIntosh reports that feelings of nauseousness and dizziness, often related to drinking wheatgrass juice, is attributed to mold developing on the plant.

    Warning

    • Soaking wheat seeds too long causes fermentation. Fermented seeds may sprout but will not result in good quality wheatgrass. Keep dampness away from the seeds by storing them in a dry, airtight container.
