Barberry vs. Oregon Grape Root

Barberry, or Berberis vulgaris, and Oregon grape root, scientifically known as Mahonia aquifolium, both contain a chemical called berberine. This chemical can slow or stop the growth of bacteria, and it may help the body's immune system function better. Barberry and Oregon grape root are used in herbal and alternative medicine, but consult your health care provider before attempting to use either medicinally.
  1. History

    • Barberry has been used for more than 2,500 years in folk medicine. This herb was used to treat diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, stomach upset and loss of vigor.

Oregon grape root is a traditional oral and topical folk medicine. It was used for skin problems, gastritis, fever, hemorrhaging, jaundice, gall bladder disease and cancer.

    Warning

    • Berberine causes uterine contractions and can lead to a miscarriage in pregnant women. Neither barberry nor Oregon grape root is safe for internal use by young children, nursing women, people with severe liver disease and people with kidney disease. These herbs may interact with antibiotics, blood thinners, antihistamines, blood pressure medicines, water pills and diabetic medicines.
