How to Grow Herbs in Eggshells

Instead of waiting for spring to arrive, you can germinate herbs indoors in eggshells. Eggshells work well for seed starting planters because they are lightweight, organic and porous. Once you plant the herbs in the eggshells, they do not require a lot of care. When the seeds germinate, you can transplant them to new pots or give them away as gifts with care instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Crack each egg open carefully two-thirds up on the smallest end with a dull butter knife. Rinse the eggshells with cool water carefully and place them on paper towels to dry.

    • 2

Poke three small holes in the bottom of the eggshells with a needle. This will allow the water to drain from the eggshell so that it does not remain soggy.

    • 3

Fill a planting tray with moist sand. Place the eggshells into the sand so that they remain in place. The sand will need to come up to the middle of the shell.

    • 4

Fill the eggshells with moist commercial potting soil. Sow two or three of the herb seeds into each eggshell.

    • 5

Cover the prepared eggshells with plastic wrap. Place the newly planted herbs in a sunny window. Keep the sand moist so that it will soak into the soil from the holes in the bottom of the eggs.

    • 6

Remove the clear plastic wrap when the seeds germinate. Water the sand so it remains damp and ensure that the herbs receive plenty of sunlight.

    • 7

Follow the herb seed instructions for general care. Transplant the herbs to larger containers and care for them according to the variety that you are growing.
