Can Honeysuckle Be Grown Indoors?

Honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.) are a large family of shrubs and vines that come in deciduous, evergreen or semievergreen varieties. The plants are grown for their clusters of tubular, fragrant flowers in shades of white, orange, yellow or purple. Though you can start the seed indoors, honeysuckles grow best outdoors given their cultural requirements and generally large sizes.
  1. Variety

    • Widely used honeysuckle varieties include gold flame honeysuckle (Lonicera x heckrottii). Given its mature height and width, the plant will thrive best in an open outdoor area.

    Description

    • Gold flame honeysuckle is a semievergreen vine that blooms from spring and well into the early frost. The plant grows to a full height of about 10 feet with a 20-foot spread. The blue-green foliage keeps its color in areas with mild winters. The fragrant flowers are yellow on the inside and carmine or deep red outside.

    Cultural Conditions

    • Like all honeysuckle varieties, gold flame honeysuckle thrives best in areas of full sun. This makes an outdoor location best suited for growing the plant. The vine does not flower well in areas of partial shade. You can plant it outside near a window to enjoy the fragrance inside. Plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.
