The Best Time to Transplant Zoysia Grass

Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) is a warm season grass that spreads with stolons and rhizomes. The grass is a native of Southeast Asia, Japan and China and starts to green early in spring. Propagate Zoysiagrasses with plugs, seeds or sod depending on variety. Transplanting the grass at the recommended time ensures optimal growth.
  1. Transplanting Recommendation

    • Transplant zoysiagrass plugs and sod any time throughout the year. Find it commercially during spring or summer because the grass turns brown and goes dormant during cold weather.

    Cultural Requirements

    • Plant zoysiagrass in areas of full sun for best growth. The grass tolerates moderate shade and adapts well to a range of soil types including clay, sand and alkaline. Fertilize with a 16-4-8 fertilizer twice yearly in spring and fall. The ideal mowing height for the grass is 1 to 2 inches.

    Appearance and Tolerances

    • The grass is dark green in color and has a fine to medium texture, producing a dense, prickly turf. Zoysiagrass requires low maintenance and is highly tolerant of drought, heavy traffic and heat. The dense turf is sometimes hard to mow evenly.
