How to Shade Garden Herbs

Herbs can be used as spices or as folk remedies to cure what ails you. No matter your reason for growing them, you need to know where to plant each variety so that they can grow to their full potential. Most herbs prefer sunny conditions. But, some prefer partial shade. Always refer to the grower's reference card that comes with your plants to determine the best spot for your herbs. Herbs that need partial, or full, shade can be grown under various types of cover to protect them from direct sunlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your seedling herbs at the base of trees. Place the herbs that require partial sunlight at various places around the trees in your yard.

    • 2

Dig a trench in front of the hedges next to your house with a small gardener's shovel. Space out seedling herbs in this trench and cover the base of the plants with loose soil.

    • 3

Install a row of seedlings behind your hedges. Keep them within 9 inches of the house to prevent spills from your gutter from drowning your herbs.

    • 4

Cut treated 2-inch by 2-inch boards with your saw to build a frame 2 feet wide, 3 feet tall and 4 feet long. Hammer 8d nails into the lumber to secure the frame.

    • 5

Lay a plastic tarp onto the frame. Fasten the tarp to the frame with a staple gun. Cut the excess tarp off of your frame with a razor knife. Plant your seedlings under the raised tarp.
