The University of Georgia Extension and the Clemson Cooperative Extension recommend the use of atrazine for the effective control of Florida betony in centipede grass. The chemical is sold under different trade names.
Products containing atrazine are classified as selective herbicides that effectively control a number of grassy and broadleaf weeds. Given the potential risk of groundwater contamination through improper use, the chemical is termed a restricted-use pesticide that only certified applicators may buy and use. Atrazine is sold in several forms: liquid, dry flowable and wettable powder.
Apply the herbicide to centipede grass in fall and again between the middle of winter and early spring. Avoid using atrazine premixed in fertilizers on centipede grass as this makes the grass susceptible to winter injury. Weed-and-feed products containing atrazine are manufactured and sold by various companies.
