How to Soak Chia Seeds

Chia is a member of the sage family and has been used as a "superfood" for hundreds of years. An excellent source of protein, calcium and antioxidants, chia seeds can be planted or you can just eat the seeds. The leaves from the chia plant can also be consumed, providing a plethora of nutrients and vitamins. Whether you are eating raw chia seeds or trying to grow a chia plant, soak the seeds first for optimal planting or for an alternative to eating the dry seeds.

Instructions

  1. For Planting

    • 1

Fill a bowl with 1/4 cup of water. Add 2 tsp. of chia seeds.

    • 2

Let the seeds and water sit for 15 minutes. Stir up the seeds well so they are thoroughly moistened with the water.

    • 3

Allow the chia seeds to sit in the water for 24 hours before removing them for planting. Plant your chia seeds in porous soil and allow them to get plenty of sunlight.

    For Eating

    • 4

Fill a jar with 2 cups of water. Add 1/3 cup of chia seeds.

    • 5

Stir up the seeds and water well. Put the lid on the jar and stick it in the refrigerator.

    • 6

Wait at least 10 minutes for the chia seeds and water to create a gel. The longer you let the seeds soak, however, the more nutrients you will get from the chia seeds.

    • 7

Scoop out the gel to eat. If you don't want to eat the gel by itself, add some to a smoothie, mix it in with your salad dressing or put a spoonful in some pudding or granola.
