Pour a small amount of gravel into the bottom of the pot you will use to plant the basil. Basil needs to have ample drainage for the roots, and filling the pot with gravel will help roots get the water they need.
Place the basil plant in an area of the home where it will receive ample sunlight. To ensure proper growth, basil should get between six to eight hours of sunlight each day. If you have basil inside, put it on a windowsill that receives plenty of sun.
Water basil as needed to keep soil moist, but not soaked. Overwatering can kill the plant.
Pull off leaves frequently to promote growth. Pull off tips of the plant once there are about six leaves clumped together. Fresh leaves are more fragrant and have a higher quality of taste, so picking frequently to add to food is ideal.
