Indoor Herb Garden Craft

An herb garden is a decorative way to bring plant life into an indoor space. Herbs take up very little room as an indoor garden. These plants also make tasty additions to soups, salads, sauces and desserts. Growing your own indoor herb garden is easily done, and if you are crafty, you can make a project of it by personalizing your pots and labels. Keep the finished product for yourself or give the garden away to someone you love.
  1. Herbs in Colorful Boxes

    • Select the herbs you wish to grow in your garden. Gather a different milk carton for each type of herb you plan to plant. Cut the tops off of the cartons so that they are open boxes; rinse the cartons to clean them out. Use a pencil to punch a drainage hole into the bottom of each carton. Paint the cartons using nontoxic paint (such as tempera), allowing the cartons to dry thoroughly. Fill the cartons with potting mix, and sprinkle a different herb seed into each carton. Water the planters each day and place in a sunny location to enjoy your fresh indoor herb garden. This project is ideal for children or beginning gardeners.

    Herbs in Painted Pots

    • Select the types of herbs you wish to plant and purchase seeds for each. Purchase a small terra cotta pot for each variety of herb you wish to grow. Paint the pots according to your preferences -- a color scheme, favorite colors, even a different color for each type of herb. Allow the pots to dry thoroughly, then fill with potting mix. Sprinkle a different type of herb seed into each pot, then water. Find a sunny location such as a window sill for your indoor garden to grow. This craft is ideal for beginning and experienced crafters/gardeners alike. Write the name of each herb on colored craft sticks with a permanent marker, and place in each pot as a plant label.

    Coffee Cup Herbs

    • Select one drink mug for each variety of herb you wish to grow. Add drainage holes to the mug with a drill. Or skip the drill by filling the bottom third of the mug with gravel to provide drainage (this method is perfect for children or those who are not handy with a drill). Fill the mugs to the top with potting mix, sprinkling a different herb seed into each mug. Water daily, placing the mug pots in a sunny spot for optimum herb growth.

    Recycled Plastic Container Herb Pots

    • Plastic yogurt, butter, sour cream or even cream cheese containers make ideal herb pots. Simply rinse the used containers and punch drainage holes into the bottom of each. Purchase colorful twine or string and use a paintbrush to spread a layer of glue onto the outside of the containers. Start at the bottom of the container and wind the string or twine around the containers to the top, covering the containers. After the glue dries, fill the containers with potting mix then sprinkle a different herb seed into each container. Place in a sunny indoor spot and water daily.
