How to Make Your Own Herb Terrarium

Adding a herb terrarium to the kitchen is a practical method of growing your own supply of fresh herbs for tea or homemade soups, stews and omelets. Young children can enjoy participating in making this tiny garden and keeping it watered. Children can also enjoy watching the herb seeds sprout and plants grow. This low-cost and uncomplicated herb terrarium would also make a thoughtful handmade gift from a child to a grandparent who enjoys cooking with fresh herbs.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-liter clear plastic soda bottle
  • Scissors
  • Large bowl
  • Potting soil
  • Green tea, basil, tarragon or parsley seeds

Instructions

      Cut off the top 5-inches of the soda bottle with the scissors.

      Cut off the bottom 5-inches of the soda bottle with the scissors.

      Mix 2 cups of potting soil with water in the bowl until the soil is damp but not wet. Fill the bottom 5-inch high portion of the soda bottle 3/4 full with potting soil.

      Plant the herb seeds at a depth recommended by the seed packet instructions.

      Place the large portion of the soda bottle upside down over the bottom portion that contains the soil and seed.

      Place the finished herb terrarium in a sunny location. Check every day to make sure the soil is moist, adding more water if needed.
