How to Grow Herbs With Miracle-Gro

Growing your own herbs is an ideal way to add flavor, zest and extra nutrition to your cooking. It also guarantees you access to fresh, healthful herbs while saving you money on your grocery bill. Herb gardens are grown in outdoor patches or in containers inside or outside of homes, in most every season. Maintaining the health of the herbs involves using fertilizers, such as Miracle-Gro, to nourish the plants and increase growth. This type of fertilizer also helps keep herbs healthier when they are grown out of season.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the type of garden you wish to grow, indoor or out. Once you decide on a location, determine if you wish to grow your garden in containers (pots) or in the ground.

    • 2

Select the types of herbs you wish to grow. Research different types of herbs and select herbs that grow best in the environment you have to offer, such as sunny, shady, damp, dry, indoor or outdoor. Compact herbs, small in size but dense in foliage, are best for indoor container gardens. Most commonly grown varieties of container herbs include thyme, rosemary, basil and oregano. Purchase plants or seeds in the varieties of herbs you wish to grow.

Prepare your garden area. If growing in the ground, till the soil. If using containers, select containers suitable for growing the types of herbs you wish to grow. Plastic containers hold moisture in for plants that need more, like basil, and terra cotta pots allow moisture to escape for plants that need less water, like thyme or rosemary. Fill holes in the garden or fill containers with rich potting mix, then water the mix so that it is moist rather than soggy. Miracle-Gro also makes garden potting mixes with slow-release fertilizers already mixed in.

Plant the seeds or starter plants in the prepared garden area. If planting starter plants, be careful not to damage the roots of the plants when transplanting.

Care for your herb plants by watering according to individual herb plant needs. For example, basil requires daily watering, while rosemary prefers drier soil and may be watered less frequently. Fertilize the plants using Miracle-Gro, mixing and applying it according to the directions on the package.
