How to Germinate Oregano

Oregano leaves add flavor to many different types of culinary dishes. The perennial herb has an aromatic scent and a slightly bitter taste. The flavor intensity varies by the cultivar type and the growing condition. Germinating the oregano seeds allows you to get a head start on the growing season. Once the seeds germinate, the herb can grow indoors or outdoors depending on your preference. Oregano does not require much care and is ready to harvest when it reaches 4 to 5 inches tall.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a polyethylene bag with slightly moist peat moss. Add the desired amount of oregano seeds. Seal the bag closed and place it into the refrigerator for one week before you plant the seeds. Refrigerating the seeds stratifies them by forcing them to break dormancy so the seeds will germinate.

    • 2

Fill a small seed-starting container with fresh potting soil. Sprinkle the oregano seeds over the surface.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water. Mist the oregano seeds with the water lightly. Continue to mist the soil when it appears dry, but avoid over watering the soil to the point that it remains soggy.

    • 4

Place the oregano in a sunny location. The oregano seeds will germinate within one to two weeks.

    • 5

Transplant the seedlings when they grow one true set of leaves. Fill a 12-inch pot with soil or transplant the seedlings outdoors. Remove the seedlings from the container carefully and plant them so that the roots remain covered by the soil.

    • 6

Space the oregano seedlings 6 to 12 inches apart to allow the spice to grow and spread. Place the seedlings in a sunny location.

    • 7

Water the seedlings so that the soil remains moist. Harvest the seedlings before the plants bloom, because the essential oils begin to disappear when the flowers blossom.
