How to Sprout Chia

Chia is a small green sprout best known for its ability to flourish for several weeks on a moist clay surface, such as the famous Chia Pet. But beyond the novelty factor, the chia seeds are prized for their nutritive value, and the sprouts themselves can be used in sandwiches or salads much in the same way as alfalfa sprouts. They can also sprout on almost any moisture-bearing medium.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the bottom of a flat tray with soil or a cloth sprouting medium. You can buy disposable sprouting mats from many garden supply stores, but any thick, coarse fabric capable of holding moisture will do.

    • 2

Moisten the soil or sprouting medium so that it is damp, but not sopping wet. Sprinkle the chia seeds evenly and lightly over the surface.

    • 3

Place the tray indoors in indirect light. Keep the temperature at about 70 degrees F (21 degrees C).

    • 4

Lightly water or mist the seeds daily. Keep the sprouting medium moist without allowing it to become soggy.

    • 5

Move the tray to a well-lit location once the seeds have sprouted and the hulls of the seeds begin to vanish.
