How to Kill a Raspberry Bush

Raspberries are a widely grown small fruit in home gardens. The fruit grows on bushes that have perennial roots and biennial stems or canes. Raspberries are from the bramble fruit group that gets its name from the thorns on its canes. The greater varieties of raspberries are summer bearing and come in red, yellow and black colors. Raspberry bushes spread over time if not kept in control. The best way to kill an unwanted raspberry bush is with herbicide, cites the Ohio State University Extension.

  Use products containing glyphosate for effectively killing a raspberry bush with roots, as recommended by the Washington State University Extension. Buy undiluted, water-soluble formulas as these have greater efficacy than the esters.

  Spray the foliage of the raspberry bush from all sides. This is referred to as foliar treatment and is effective for bushes up to 15 feet tall.

  Cover the plant from all sides, but do not drench the foliage to the point of runoff. Do not use herbicide on very hot days or on plants that are severely drought stressed. Glyphosate is most effective when used during August and September.

  Avoid the use of herbicide if there is a chance of rain within six hours of treatment. Repeat application after seven to 10 days.

  Cut the dead bush down to the stump using an ax and remove the debris. Dig out the stump with a hoe or shovel and discard the waste.
