Helleborus viridis is the species more commonly known as green hellebore. It is a deciduous perennial which grows to a height of 12 to 16 inches. It sports green, leathery, lance-shaped leaves and green winter blooms that may be tinged with purple or copper.
Green hellebore is native to woodlands, meadows and scrubby areas of northern and western Europe. It is a common species found in shaded, damp wild areas. Though green hellebore is not found widely in home gardens, garden centers that offer a variety of hellebore plants may carry seeds for helleborus viridis.
Green hellebore are not commonly cultivated in gardens because there are many prettier species of hellebore with showier blooms that are preferred. Green hellebore plant prefers heavy, clay soils and shade; however, partial sun is required for green hellebore to bloom. The more sun exposure, the more rapid the growth and spreading of this species.
