Does Growing Parsley Spread?

Parsley is a member of the carrot family and is commonly used as garnishes and flavor in cooking. This herb has a biennial life cycle, which means that the leaves grow the first year and seeds are produced the second year. Parsley rarely regrows from the roots the second year, since in cold climates freezing weather kills the roots.
  1. Spreading

    • Parsley spreads through seeds, either naturally or through planting. This herb does not propagate through stems or underground runners. The roots produce a bunch of aboveground stems.

    Conditions

    • Parsley grows best when planted in an area with six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Plant parsley seeds in well-draining soil with lots of organic material, like compost.

    Harvesting

    • Clip the parsley stalks close to the ground with a sharp pair of scissors. Work from the outside toward the center of the bunch; this encourages growth of more stalks. When only the tops are picked, the parsley bunch declines rather than being rejuvenated.
