How to Get a Deep Green Color in the Leaves of a Curry Plant

The curry leaf tree, known botanically as Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii, is a tropical evergreen flowering and fruiting shrub. The black fruits are eaten fresh from the shrub and the leaves are prized as a fresh and dried spice in Indian, Indonesian and other cuisines. Curry shrubs thrive in sun and warm temperatures. They grow well only in the very far southeast portion of Florida in the United States, according to the University of California Riverside and the darkest, most flavorful leaves come from plants reared in hot and dry conditions.

      Grow your curry leaf shrub in a warm frost-free location where ambient nighttime temperatures never drop below 54 degrees Fahrenheit and preferably remain at or above 64 F.

      Position your curry leaf shrub so it receives bright, strong direct sunlight for a minimum of eight to 10 hours each day. Trim away any trees or other shrubs that may block the maximum amount of sunlight from reaching the plant. The more sunlight, the greater the rate of photosynthesis and the more lush and green the foliage will be.

      Trim the shrub lightly and regularly during the growing season to encourage branching and the development of fresh green leaves.

      Fertilize your curry leaf shrub lightly throughout the growing season with a gentle, slow-release complete fertilizer with a guaranteed analysis of 10-10-10. Apply according to the product label, watering in well and always err on the side of less not more fertilizer. The nitrogen will help produce the an abundance of the deepest green foliage.
