How to Remove Flowering Buds on Growing Chives

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are typically grown as herbs, but they are also attractive flowering plants in the home garden. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible. Leaves can be dried and stored for use year-round. Flowers are best used soon after harvesting. If you are growing chives, remove the flowers either for consumption or to help your chive plant grow well throughout the summer.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the chive plant begins to flower in late spring or early summer.

    • 2

Pinch off the buds just under the flowers when they begin to open if you plan to use the florets in salads or other dishes.

    • 3

Pinch off the flower buds after they bloom to help the plant save energy it would have used to make seeds and to discourage dormancy during the summer. This way, you can enjoy the pinkish-lavender blooms in the garden without compromising the plant's ability to thrive throughout the summer.
