Herb Height and Spacing

Knowing the height and spacing allowance of plants is important in controlling growth of the plants. It also allows space to walk between the plants. Gardens that contain many types of herbs must be planted so the shorter ones are visible. In simple gardens, the taller plants should be at the back. In a raised bed garden, taller plants can be placed in the center. Shorter herbs can be placed around all visible sides.
  1. Shorter Herbs

    • Marjoram will grow 10 to 12 inches tall, while chervil may be 10 to 28 inches tall. Winter savory and woodruff grow to 6 to 12 inches. Chamomile is usually about 9 inches tall but spreads quickly. Thyme can be as short as 2 inches or as tall as 12 inches. Summer savory grows 12 to 18 inches tall, while oregano and spearmint may grow up to 24 inches. Naturally, these herbs should be planted in front of or surrounding taller plants.

    Medium and Taller Herbs

Chervil only needs 3 to 4 inches of space between plants. Taller herbs such as anise, chives, marjoram and thyme should be 10 to 12 inches apart. Borage and oregano need 10 to 12 inches of space. Fennel, hyssop, lemon balm and woodruff can be planted 12 to 14 inches apart. Horehound, lavender, peppermint and spearmint can take up as much as 24 inches of space. Lovage, sage and tarragon need up to 39 inches between plantings for good growth.

    Row Spacing

    • Rows of anise, chervil, coriander and parsley should be 8 to 12 inches apart. Burnet, catnip and chamomile spread on their own. Chives, marjoram, oregano, thyme and woodruff can be planted in rows that are 10 inches apart. Borage and hyssop rows should be separated by 20 to 24 inches. Dill, lavender, peppermint and spearmint also need 24 inches of space between rows. Caraway, fennel and rosemary rows need at least 36 inches of growing space each.
