How to Grow Ginger Inside

As well as providing aromatic roots for cooking, ginger plants make attractive houseplants. They have the bold colors of many tropical or rain forest plants, with the advantage that they are relatively easy to care for. It is possible to grow a ginger plant from a piece of ginger, or simply purchase one from a garden supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose several pieces of ginger root, if this is how you plan to grow your plants. You are most likely to have success with ginger root pieces that already show buds developing.

    • 2

Soak the roots in a bowl of cold water overnight. This stimulates growth and gets them off to a good start.

    • 3

Place pieces of broken clay pots in each pot to assist drainage.

    • 4

Mix about two parts potting compost with one part vermiculite or coarse sand to form a loose, easily draining soil. Fill each pot, leaving a few inches at the top. Press down lightly.

    • 5

Press each piece of ginger root into a pot. Keep the ginger root horizontal and have any buds facing up.

    • 6

Cover the roots with an inch or two of potting compost and press the compost down lightly. Water each pot thoroughly.

    • 7

Position the pots on saucers in a warm room with good natural light.

    • 8

Water the pots frequently enough to keep the soil slightly damp and continue this frequency of watering once the ginger plants emerge. Ginger is adapted to damp climates.

    • 9

Mist the ginger plant leaves a couple of times a week.

    • 10

Apply an organic or inorganic fertilizer for houseplants every couple of months as per the instructions.

    • 11

Harvest the new ginger roots once the leaves die back. Retain a few pieces of root to start the next crop and freeze any other pieces you do not plan to use for cooking immediately.
